The Central of Georgia Railway Historical Society (CGRHS) held its spring meeting in Rome, Georgia on May 13-14 2011.
Friday evening's meeting was held at the Comfort Suites meeting room where the society had its train show merchandise available for purchase. After a time of fellowship, our meeting began with an update on recent events by society president Allen Tuten and director Ken Preston. Todd Horton, meeting organizer and past president of the society gave an overview of the next day's activities and introduced our guest speaker, Robert Ledbetter, Sr. He was the son of Allison W. Ledbetter, chairman of the board of the Central of Georgia Railway during the 1950s - early 1960s. Robert gave us an informal presentation about his father and shared many insights about the CofGa during his father's tenure as chairman.
Saturday's activities began with a tour of Georgia Power's Plant Hammond, which was served by the CofGa Railway. Members enjoyed an informative presentation and a plant tour. Of particular interest was the Georgia Power switch engine and the areas used to dump coal cars. After the tour, we followed the CofGa roadbed north of Rome and enjoyed viewing areas of roadbed, rail junctions, and industries served by the CofGa. After lunch, we traveled to a trail on the former CofGa roadbed which included two bridges and a half mile of paved pathways (see photo below right). Our group also visited the site of the CofGa depot in Rome. Our tour followed the old roadbed south to Lindale before returning to the hotel.
For many, the highlight of the trip was the opportunity to see a historic piece of CofGa rolling stock (see photo below left). A former CofGa flat car believed to have been built in the 1920s was located on private property and members enjoyed taking a close look at the car, which was in remarkable condition for its age.
